Is this a hybrid? From a distance I assumed sugar maple because most leaves were yellow but upon closer inspection the leaf shape is odd and there’s some red coloration. Very large old tree that I assume pre-dates the neighborhood. I estimate DBH to be upwards of 6’.

Collected hovering about 3 ft above ground, within 1 ft of a stone wall, in the shade of a porch. Long legs dangled together resembling a wasp. Hovering was a little jerky, not smooth.

This is the first caterpillar of Polygonia progne I ever saw in Maryland, and the only one in such an advanced stage of development (kind of worrisome). The first photo shows the typical way this species eat the plant's leaves, leaving only the steams, and from top of the branch to the bottom
