Columbian Black-tailed Deer (Odocoileus hemionus ssp. columbianus) is a subspecies of Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus). O. h. columbianus has a fully black outer tail. They have sometimes been treated as a species, but virtually all recent authorities maintain they are a subspecies. They are commonly seen on the Monterey Peninsula on golf courses and neighborhoods like Pacific Grove and Pebble Beach where they have no need to fear humans.
