A confirmed case of lion poaching by professional Sudanese poachers from South Darfur. Body parts of large cats of prey such as the Northern Lion and the African Leopard are currently fetching high prices in the east of the Central African Republic and there is a brisk trade. Outside actively managed protected areas such as the 24,300 km2 core zone of the Chinko Conservation Area, it must be assumed that large carnivores (>15 kg) are hunted and tracked intensively over large areas. Unorganized international transhumance makes it easier to access, find and transport large carnivores even in the most remote regions far from permanent settlements, roads or any human infrastructure.
