I like to learn about the natural world. At heart I am probably a geologist, but my career was as a science educator, exploring why and how people learn about science. I have written about this with a couple of colleagues (https://www.routledge.com/Supporting-Self-Directed-Learning-in-Science-and-Technology-Beyond-the/Rennie-Stocklmayer-Gilbert/p/book/9781138353268) and now I am focusing on science communication. Citizen science projects like this one give ordinary people the opportunity to develop a relationship with science. The to and fro discussion that arise on this site provide opportunities to develop a reflective and critical attitude about science. It's cumulative, evidence-based, and the best current explanation for what we see and experience in the world.
