AfriHerps Mini Bioblitz: Coming soon!

A new Mini Bioblitz will be starting in November, hosted by AfriHerps! The purpose of this Mini Bioblitz is to encourage iNat users to look for a certain genus of herps for a monthly period.

For example, we would encourage people to look for species in the "genus Agama", and then list range for the species, the conservation importance of that genus, and where to typically find them. All observations, uploaded or observed in the one month period, will be added to our Mini Bioblitz project, found here:

We will be making journal posts (for example, what to look for in the next month, or mentioning notable observations) for our Mini Bioblitz in the "AfriHerps Mini Bioblitz" project, so check the project for updates, or join to get updates in your dashboard!

Thank you for looking, and please feel free to express your feelings about this in the commentaries!

Tagging some notable active herp observers in case they may be interested, and I hope this doesn't feel like spam! @luisquerido @dakhlarovers @alexanderr @joachim @martingrimm @congonaturalist @andrasz @bushboy @i_c_riddell @shirleyhitschmann @csavy @johnnybirder

Thanks for the positive feedback! Any suggestions on what genus we should start out with in November?

Anotado por calebcam hace mas de 6 años

perhaps something widespread and not too uncommon

I was thinking that too, maybe Trachylepis?

Maybe i'll have a new cover photo every month showing the species selected for the Mini bioblitz. Another thing that would be helpful is since most genus's are in a limited range, we could do two genus's for the month, and if one was in southern africa, then the other would be in northern. Then, people from all over Africa would have something to look for. Thoughts?

Yip, that sounds good. You could also do a little summary on which species still need to be observed (at the start) to try encourage users to target them.

It sounds like a great idea. I will also try to recruit other people to help for the month. Looking forward to hearing what you choose.

I like the idea. Adding @zarek who is linked to a few facebook groups on east African herps and seems to be well connected with a lot of experts in the region.

So I have settled on Trachylepis and Uromastyx as our two picks for the Mini Bioblitz. All updates will now be posted in the (https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/afriherps-mini-bioblitz) project, so please feel free to join!
