newt survey 12/04 - southern half

107 dead newts, 3 live newts.
December 4, 2019 (Wednesday) 11:30am-1:30pm
Weather: Had just finished raining. Overcast and 53F.
Other roadkill: 1 Western Toad, 1 California Slender Salamander, 1 Western Fence Lizard, 1 (Bull?)frog.
Coverage: Aldercroft Heights Road intersection to just after the big Soda Springs road bend (37°11'12.6"N 121°59'09.5"W).
Rainfall: MTD: 2.73 in; YTD: 6.21 in
Traffic: Light. 13 vehicles, half of which were local traffic (saw them entering/exiting spur roads).

Today there was a section just south of the Soda Springs bend that had a bunch of tiny baby newts, both alive (the only live ones I saw today) and flattened. Here's a very cute live one being moved off the road to newt another day: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/36368929
Today again all the living newts were heading away from the reservoir.

Side note: crazy that we've had 6 inches of rain already! No wonder a bunch of streets flooded last week.

I think most of these are probably males, since they are the first to migrate. Very interesting that you saw so many juveniles. I've seen more juveniles in Soda Springs Canyon than at Limekiln Canyon.
