The City Nature Challenge returns April 29-May 9!

Because you've registered for a BioBlitz in the past, I wanted to let you know that the biggest BioBlitz of the year is coming up at the end of this month! Join Lincoln Park Zoo's team for the “City Nature Challenge,” an annual event where participants from over 350 cities across the world compete to log the most observations of the natural world. This year’s observation window will be from April 29th-May 2nd. Observations will be identified from May 2nd-May 9th. We need your help to put Chicago on the map!

There are many ways to participate:

  1. Register to join Lincoln Park Zoo’s “City Nature Challenge” team here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/lincoln-park-zoo-bioblitz-city-nature-challenge-2022-registration-297327904767 Your free registration will unlock access to three different events throughout the weekend. You can attend as many (or few) events as you like!
    a. Friday, April 29, 6-7 pm: BioBlitz 101 - kickoff and introduction (on Zoom). Staff from Lincoln Park Zoo will inform participants what to look for and how to use iNaturalist.
    b. Saturday, April 30, 11 am - 2 pm: BioBlitz @ Lincoln Park Zoo's Nature Boardwalk (in person). Come together for hands-on discovery & practice field research methods with scientists from Lincoln Park Zoo’s Urban Wildlife Institute. You can also meet research partners from the Cook County Farm Bureau, DuPage Forest Preserve, and Lake Forest College. This event is drop-in style, so you do not need to stay for the full duration.
    c. Monday, May 9, 6-7 pm: BioBlitz Celebration and Wrap-up (on Zoom). Join the celebration to hear expert commentary on your contributions and ask questions about anything you noticed while BioBlitz-ing.

  2. View more in-person events happening around the Chicago area here: https://www.chicagowilderness.org/page/CityNatureChallenge These events are not organized by Lincoln Park Zoo, but they are sure to be a great time! Options include bird walks, beach clean-ups, and more.
  3. If you’d rather collect data independently, join the worldwide “City Nature Challenge” project on iNaturalist here: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2021-chicago-metro Collect observations from April 29th-May 2nd and upload them using your free iNaturalist account. Your observations will automatically be added to the challenge!
  4. Help identify photos uploaded by other iNaturalist users during the identification window (May 3-9). Identifying photos is a great way to practice your research skills from the comfort of your own home.
