Support Kākāpō Recovery to Fight Aspergillosis

Donate to help this critically endangered species fight a devastating disease. Find out how by visiting the Kākāpō Recovery donation page.

From Kākāpō Recovery:

"There are only 142 kākāpō alive today.

Kākāpō need our urgent support. We are currently managing an aspergillosis outbreak affecting many of the kākāpō on Whenua hou. Detecting and treating birds with this potentially fatal disease is extremely difficult. Birds are flown by helicopter to mainland New Zealand for CT scans, and if affected face several months or more of intensive treatment.

You can help support this response by donating to the kākāpō aspergillosis fund. All funds will go directly towards managing the outbreak and researching the cause to reduce future impacts on this critically endangered species."

Aspergillosis is a fungal infection generally targeting the avian respiratory tract and/or occasionally the central nervous system. Other organ systems may also be affected.

Protect Wildlife from Rodenticides- Support AB 1788

Rodenticides kill far more than their intended targets. Support California bill AB 1788 to ban the use of second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides which harms wildlife through secondary poisoning.

How to help:

Please email the California Senate Environmental Quality Committee, and ask them to vote YES in support of AB 1788.

Written comments are urgently requested to be in by 12 PM on Wednesday, June 5.

For more information about this bill, including how to email the committee, visit Citizens for Los Angeles Wildlife (CLAW) at http://www.clawonline.org/banratpoison.

Many thanks to member @andreacala for bringing this issue to our attention.

Wildlife Health Umbrella Projects

Howdy! I've been the administrator of Wildlife Diseases: Morbidity and Mortality project for almost a year now. After spending time browsing the many projects on iNaturalist, I have noticed several other projects pertaining to wildlife health. I thought it would be beneficial to have all of these projects available to everyone in one convenient place; thus, I have recently created umbrella projects to manage all the data. From avian influenza to tick monitoring, all pertinent observations are included in Wildlife Health Connected.

Along the same lines, I have also created separate umbrella projects for bird collision and roadkill observations since there are quite a few of these projects available on iNaturalist. They also impact the health of our wildlife and therefore contain valuable insight for (hopefully) managing these issues.

Bird Collisions Connected
Road Mortalities Connected

Finally, if I have missed any projects, please let me know! I have tried to include all those relevant, but realize that I may have inadvertently skipped over a few.

Questions/comments/advice/input? Always welcome!

Wildlife Rehabilitation Resources

If you encounter injured, ill, or orphaned wildlife, please contact your Department of Natural Resources or regional Game and Fish Office for further information. Wildlife rehabilitation centers and veterinarians may also offer assistance (please call first).

Concerning wildlife:

-Do not take baby wildlife from the wild.
-Quietly observe wildlife from a respectable distance.
-Do not try to care for wildlife on your own; many species require specialized handling and care. There is great potential to do more harm than good.
-Do not keep wildlife as pets; in many cases, it is illegal to posses wildlife without proper state and federal permits.
-Do not approach or handle unfamiliar animals or animals exhibiting abnormal behavior; injuries (bites, scratches) and zoonotic disease transmission are risks.
-Report abnormal animal behavior and animal bites to appropriate authorities such as animal control, veterinarian, public health agency, and/or wildlife agency.
-Keep pets up-to-date on their vaccines; limit exposure to wildlife by keeping cats indoors and dogs on leashes.

For additional information on wildlife rehabilitation, please visit:

National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association
International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council

If you have any tips on wildlife rehabilitation, please add them in the comments below! Thanks!
