Need ID - this moth and others like it show up every August - almost always in the last two weeks of the month, and cover my window screens with eggs at night. I've lived in this house for 21 years, and it's only been in the last 3 years that I've see this. Is it a newly-arrived invasive moth?

Alright, what's this then? It doesn't really look like a balanid or chthamalid, and indeed it wouldn't seem to be any of those species unless it's a really young, weird balanid. If you zoom in to the far left of the barnacle, it certainly looks like the rostrum overlaps the rostrolateral plates, so that would rule out a chthamalid identity. It's definitely Balanomorpha at least so let's go through and see what it could be. It's not Chelonibiidae, Platylepadidae, Coronulidae, Pyrgomatidae, Acastinae, Bryozobiinae, Pachylasmatidae, or Catophragmidae. It doesn't match any Tetraclitidae either. So maybe it's Elminiidae/Elminiinae, or maybe it's Archaeobalanidae.

It actually does look quite like Austrominius, but it has 6 plates so if it's Elminiidae it must be Hexaminius. From here, H. foliorum is a specialist that lives almost solely on mangrove leaves. What about H. popeiana? Certainly ALA has some records of them from here. However, the diagram from this paper indicates quite a different barnacle, with very asymmetrically-sized lateral plates. So it is not an Elminiid.

What about Archaeobalaninae? Main information comes from here. Conopea have the base elongate or boat-like and only and with only a small part attached, so they are out. The other three genera all look rather similar and not much like this one here unfortunately. Striatobalanus all seem rather tall and vertical, and the lateral plates are again of rather different sizes. Unless they change drastically as they grow, I think they are out. Solidobalanus are the same - vertical sides and differently-sized lateral plates - so I have the same comment. Armatobalanus are a bit more similar.... but not really. They just don't look like they could ever look like this barnacle here. So I don't think it's Archaeobalaninae either. I reckon it is a juvenile Balanid.

So what are the options for juvenile Balanidae? I guess the problem here is that most of the Balanidae look so very different, and there are actually numerous images of them that show very small individuals. Most of my information will be from here. The small individuals look similar to the adults in most cases, so it seems we don't have many options here. For a start, all of the Megabalaninae are so tall and have such incredibly vertical sides that I am happy ruling them out here. I cannot see this turning into one of them in any way.

What about Amphibalanus? Well all of the Amphibalanus species look really similar to each other, and this fact has been mentioned in some of the literature I've read, so I'm happy assuming that all of the juveniles will look pretty similar to each other as well. So, what do the juveniles look like? Luckily, we have the answer! They look quite different, because this sighting is from the same rock. Look, you can even see this barnacle in the picture: They have been exposed to the same conditions, so if they were the same species (or even genus in this case) they would look very similar. This one is clearly different, so I'm happy ousting Amphibalanus.

That just leaves Balaninae, with four species in two genera: Balanus pulchellus, B. trigonus, Fistulobalanus albicostatus, and F. pallidus. Two of these I think we can rule out almost immediately. B. pulchellus is native to China and has been intercepted in Australia only a few times. There may be an established population in Fremantle but that is a long way from here. F. pallidus is supposedly native to the Atlantic and is a rare invasive in the Pacific. This location is pretty far from any ports so I am happy ruling it out.

So, Balanus trigonus and Fistulobalanus albicostatus. Luckily for us, B. trigonus is a common and widespread species, and there are many photos of it. Have a look here - we have many individuals of various sizes: None of them look like this - they are all too steep!

So, what about Fistulobalanus albicostatus? Will our prayers of a species ID be answered, or have I gone astray yet again? It seems not, sadly. F. albicostatus is not that common. Look at this photo: The lateral plates are just completely the wrong shape, especially the rostrolateral. I can't see it happening. But then, I they're all pretty much the same for all balanids so it seems I have gone wrong there. Aha! But look at the picture above! What's that little guy in the lower middle?? That looks like a candidate.

It's......

a chthamalid.

Of course -_-

So could this then actually be a chthamalid?? I thought chthamalids were supposed to have the rostrolateral plates overlapping the rostrum, not the other way around like this one. But if you look closely at the centre, I think the rostrolateral plates do overlap the rostrum, at least near the centre. But they don't on the outside. Ugh. Wish I knew that beforehand! And look at this guy: Same location, same rock, pretty similar scutum/rostrum especially (look, they both have the little raised bit in the middle), but this one is probably a third of the size. Could this one grow into that one? Yeah, I can see that happening I guess. It doesn't look very eroded yet but the other one is certainly eroded (probably due to the age difference between the two). So I reckon this is a little Chthamalus malayensis. I'll leave it at a higher level for now just to see if other people agree with me, but I'm happy with that at this point.

Welp, barnacles are done now for this round. If I do another barnacle ID in my life it will be too soon.... (nah jokes, I should probably try to help out where I can now). Still need to ID that mystery chthamalid anyway. Thanks everyone who helped out!

Found accidentally, stuck to the rhizoids of Marchantia polymorpha, growing exposed by shallow water in developing heathland, but on what was mostly decomposing (mostly decomposed) hay. The shoot looks like it was part of a larger plant, so it could be young and not quite representative of mature shoots.
Image 3 clearly shows cells with pores and all cells in all parts of the leaf had these pores, also visible in image 5.
Image 4 shows double costas.
Image 7 shows where a bud had formed.
Image 9 shows a not-quite-entire leaf margin at the apex, which was also visible on all leaves.
