May Weed of the Month - Garlic Mustard, Alliaria petiolata

Hello invasive species watchers!

Our friends at the Columbia River Cooperative Weed Management Area (CWMA) are creating some great Weed of the Month materials this spring and summer. This month's target is Garlic Mustard (Alliaria petiolata). You can view a poster from the CWMA here: Garlic Mustard flyer and read the species description and more information from the CWMA.

Garlic mustard is a 2-3 foot tall, white-flowered, introduced biennial herb with triangular toothed leaves that smell like garlic when crushed. It has overrun areas of Multnomah County and has also been found along the Columbia River, Corvallis, and near Grants Pass and Medford. It is invasive under a wide range of light and soil conditions and readily out-competes native vegetation. If you run across single plants or small patches, or have this plant on your property, you can pull, bag, and trash them. Due to its ability to quickly spread, we are most interested in naturalists like you reporting new areas of garlic mustard.

If you observe this plant please add your sighting to the Oregon iMapInvasives project or to the Oregon Invasive Species Hotline to help us target new populations before they become thoroughly established.

Happy observing!
