348-44ste VLEN-dag (Vleermuizen Studiedag)

44ste VLEN-dag (Vleermuizen Studiedag)
Datum
29 oktober 2022
Programma

  • Willow Emeralds in the Winter – Extending Dragonfly Recording To Every Season!

Ian Merrill (BDS County Dragonfly Recorder for Leicestershire with Rutland)

As BDS recorder for VC 55 (Leicestershire & Rutland), Ian Merrill will recount his personal experience of the colonisation of VC 55 by Willow Emerald Damselfly since 2019. The presentation will focus on the benefits of searching for evidence of the species during the winter months and the huge value which can be added to our knowledge of the spread of this often-elusive species by the adoption of this tactic. The richly illustrated talk will describe how best to focus winter recording efforts, exactly where best to search and, importantly, exactly what the clues of its presence look like in the field.

Mating Blue-tailed Damselflies by Erik Svensson

A common endosymbiotic bacterium led to reduced genetic diversity in the Common Blue-tailed Damselfly (Ischnura elegans)

    Junchen Deng (Lund University)

Population genetic diversity is closely linked with the ability of species to colonize new habitats. Although both abiotic and biotic factors can shape the genetic diversity of a population, the effects of biotic factors are often unexplored. One of these biotic factors could be Wolbachia, a common endosymbiotic bacterium found in >40% of insect species. Wolbachia can manipulate host reproduction in many ways and thus influence the genetic diversity of a population. Blue-tailed damselfly (Ischnura elegans), or Common Bluetail, is a species expanding northward under global climate change. Although several studies have looked at the population genetics of I. elegans, no one has investigated Wolbachia and its potential effects on the genetic diversity of this damselfly species. In our study, we characterized Wolbachia diversity and genetic diversity of I. elegans populations across Europe by sequencing various Wolbachia and host genetic markers. Our results linked the reduction of genetic diversity of I. elegans populations to the infection of a Wolbachia strain. These findings provided an example of how endosymbiont infections can shape spatial variation in the genetic diversity of their host populations during range expansion.

    Variable Damselflies by Keith Noble

    Dragonflies of Llangorse Lake

Keith Noble (County Dragonfly Recorder for Breconshire)

Llangorse Lake is the largest natural water body in south/mid-Wales and is important for a wide range of wildlife. In recent years the number of dragonfly species has increased and this summer the Lake was recognised as a Dragonfly Hotspot, with good support from local organisations and the community. I shall illustrate the talk with my own photographs.

Reshaping the Coastline for our Future

Alys Laver, Steart Marshes Site Manager

The history of the site’s creation, changes as it’s developed, the management, and how WWT uses it as a site of inspiration for wetland creation.

Biological control of Floating pennywort using the South American weevil, Listronotus elongatus

Djami Djeddour, senior research scientist, CABI

Floating pennywort, Hydrocotyle ranunculoides, is an invasive non-native plant that can dominate still and slow-flowing water bodies. Since its establishment in the wild in the late 1980s, the plant has spread rapidly throughout England and has the potential to out-compete native plants and reduce oxygen levels by forming dense mats, which can also exacerbate flood risk. With restrictions on chemical use near water, management tends to largely rely on sustained and labour intensive mechanical and manual clearance which can exacerbate spread if the plant is fragmented. Costs linked to its management and impacts on tourism and recreational activities are estimated to exceed £25.5 million per year. Furthermore, adverse effects on biodiversity and habitats, through degradation of important wetland ecosystems and competition with native species make this one of the most damaging aquatic invaders in the country. In 2010, CABI was commissioned by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to investigate the potential of biocontrol for floating pennywort. Over a decade of research into the suitability and safety of a suite of natural enemies from its centre of origin in South America culminated in the prioritisation of a weevil, Listronotus elongatus. This insect was approved for release into the environment in late 2021. This presentation will review the project history and provide an update on progress to date.

Plot comparative distribution maps for taxa

I quite frequently like to plot the distributions of related taxa on the same map to look for potential sympatry or boundaries. Would it be possible to implement that on the taxon page for, lets say, up to 5 taxa represented by symbols of different colours?
There is some existing functionality for this, but it’s not linked to anywhere and is a bit clunky. It requires manually entering in the taxon_ids into the URL (and doesn’t display the colors in the legend).

    https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/map?taxa=121976,121951,81599

Compare lists with Result a table

You need to fill out three queries, one for each user name and a third one including all observations.
To enter the correct string for each query, go to the explore tab. Then, filter for the required fields (taxon, user name) and copy+paste everything of the URL after the ‘?’ into the first query field.
Then replace the user name in the next query and remove that part for the third query.

You will find that 9 species are ‘unique’, i.e. neither seen by you nor by your colleague
    https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/compare?s=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%3D

I did some experimentation. Yes, &unobserved_by_user_id= works, and yes, it does support comma-separated lists of usernames. Unfortunately, it appears to join the names with OR rather than AND, so it reports those species unobserved by either user, rather than by both users. So, I can’t see any easy

Here is an example where I try to search for species of Periplaneta that neither my partner nor I have seen:
    https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=any&subview=map&taxon_id=82233&unobserved_by_user_id=hydrophilus&unobserved_by_user_id=lemonsqueeze&view=species 1

As you can see, it just spits out a list of all 12 Periplaneta species currently on iNat, when I wanted it to show me the 9 species that neither of us have seen.

I’d like to see a simple way to compare a list of species found in a given location to the list of all species I have seen. For instance, I’m planning a trip to Death Valley, and I would love to be able to create a list of the species that occur within the park that I have never observed.

It would also be useful to compare observations within a place - if I’m surveying a specific area, what species have been observed in that place that I have not yet observed from that same place?

It would even be fun to be able to compare places to each other, and see the differences in species lists found there.

It’s still “experimental” but you can do some of this with the compare tool:
    https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/compare 56

For example, these spring wildflowers of Illinois observed in 2018 but not yet in 2019:

You have to narrow your searches to groups of taxa with fewer than 500 results, but other than that it’s super useful.

351-Compare lists with Result a table vs Taxa Map

Programma Florondag 2022 Nijmegen KNNV Flora

    https://www.youtube.com/user/FLORONNederland/videos

Compare lists with Result a table

You need to fill out three queries, one for each user name and a third one including all observations.
To enter the correct string for each query, go to the explore tab. Then, filter for the required fields (taxon, user name) and copy+paste everything of the URL after the ‘?’ into the first query field.
Then replace the user name in the next query and remove that part for the third query.

You will find that 9 species are ‘unique’, i.e. neither seen by you nor by your colleague
    https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/compare?s=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%3D

I did some experimentation. Yes, &unobserved_by_user_id= works, and yes, it does support comma-separated lists of usernames. Unfortunately, it appears to join the names with OR rather than AND, so it reports those species unobserved by either user, rather than by both users. So, I can’t see any easy

Here is an example where I try to search for species of Periplaneta that neither my partner nor I have seen:
    https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=any&subview=map&taxon_id=82233&unobserved_by_user_id=hydrophilus&unobserved_by_user_id=lemonsqueeze&view=species 1

As you can see, it just spits out a list of all 12 Periplaneta species currently on iNat, when I wanted it to show me the 9 species that neither of us have seen.

I’d like to see a simple way to compare a list of species found in a given location to the list of all species I have seen. For instance, I’m planning a trip to Death Valley, and I would love to be able to create a list of the species that occur within the park that I have never observed.

It would also be useful to compare observations within a place - if I’m surveying a specific area, what species have been observed in that place that I have not yet observed from that same place?

It would even be fun to be able to compare places to each other, and see the differences in species lists found there.

It’s still “experimental” but you can do some of this with the compare tool:
    https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/compare 56

For example, these spring wildflowers of Illinois observed in 2018 but not yet in 2019:
    https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/compare?s=eyJxdWVyaWVzIjpbeyJuYW1lIjoiMjAxOCIsInBhcmFtcyI6InllYXI9MjAxOCZwbGFjZV9pZD0zNSZsaXN0X2lkPTExMTgyMCJ9LHsibmFtZSI6IjIwMTkiLCJwYXJhbXMiOiJ5ZWFyPTIwMTkmcGxhY2VfaWQ9MzUmbGlzdF9pZD0xMTE4MjAifV0sInRhYiI6InNwZWNpZXMiLCJ0YXhvbkZpbHRlciI6Im5vdF9pbl9jb21tb24iLCJ0YXhvbkZyZXF1ZW5jaWVzU29ydEluZGV4IjoxLCJ0YXhvbkZyZXF1ZW5jaWVzU29ydE9yZGVyIjoiZGVzYyIsIm1hcExheW91dCI6ImNvbWJpbmVkIiwiaGlzdG9yeUxheW91dCI6ImNvbWJpbmVkIiwiaGlzdG9yeUludGVydmFsIjoid2VlayJ9 1

Daar gaat Joop Schaminée, hoogleraar vegetatie ecologie bij Wageningen University and Research, ons vanavond alles over vertellen.

  • Kindle Direct, or Amazon Self Publishing in general. Someone recently gave me a book they made with their family history and stories. I was astounded and asked about it, and he said that it costs about as much as a greeting card, so he gives them away. I checked into it, and sure enough, it is extremely reasonable to self-publish a physical book on demand 3
KDP prints your book on demand and subtracts your printing costs from your royalties. That means you don't have to pay any costs upfront or carry any inventory.
    https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G201834340
    Here is a calculator. 1

I haven’t tried it, but it looks like you can list a 300-page paperback for $7.99. If you just want to buy a batch and distribute yourself, you can do that, and you make $.34 back in royalties. If all you want to do is publish something to shop around in small quantities, or send links for people to purchase, you can’t really argue with that. Again, the premise isn’t that the writing is for direct income generation, just information distribution in a physical medium. This doesn’t come with any marketing or distribution engine that you may get from a traditional publishing house. This bypasses any vanity publishing middleman and gets a book in your hands for a reasonable price. If you have other motivations or goals, evaluate the tool accordingly.

print-on-demand publisher Lulu.com 7 to “publish” three books. I have no idea if it’s any better or worse than other print-on-demand services, it’s the one I picked 15 years ago and I’ve never had a problem with them. It’s very easy to use, you just pick a format (paperback, hardback, spiral-bound) and size, upload a pdf of the contents and cover photos, and set the price. Then anyone who wants to buy one can go there and order it, and they get it in a few days. If you ignore their extra add-ons (like editing and marketing services), there are no up-front costs (which is what separates it from a vanity press). The cost of the books is reasonable, too; I sell a 300-page, spiral-bound statistics textbook for $18 US, and I make a couple of dollars in profit. Here’s the link 14 if you want to see what a book looks like to a potential buyer

  • self-publishing is Kindle Direct. It’s owned by Amazon, which has its own problems, but it has about the best options for distribution online, it’s SUPER easy to use, you can publish both paperbacks and ebooks of the same title, and if you want to order paperbacks for gifting or resale the wholesale cost for the author is very reasonable. The only downside is that it’s really hard to get KD books into actual bookstores, but if you do get a shop interested you can decide what your wholesale price is going to be and then the shop pays you. If you don’t have enough books in hand, you can just have an order shipped directly from KD to the shop

  • shed in academia, which has similar niche issues, but has a group of libraries who are reliable customers and hence subsidize printing runs. I’m not sure your client has that and hence doesn’t get much economy of scale.

Like you, I respect what he is trying to accomplish – but maybe the easiest thing is to self-distribute his work as a PDF or ebook, or to self-publish using a print-on-demand company to produce hardcopies as needed. (My grandfather did the latter with his memoires, and we descendants are glad to have it.)

In recent decades, historians have started to emphasise the importance of photographs as historical sources of evidence. Even though historians commonly draw from textual sources or oral testimony, Peter Burke argues that we should start taking images seriously as a means to learn about the past.1 Historical photographs and what is represented in them can be used to study specific world views, cultural-historical phenomena, or expressions of identity.2 Edwards and Hart examined the photograph’s materiality and traced the material forms in which images appeared.3 Others took a more contextual approach and examined how institutional forces determined how images were produced, distributed, and presented.4 A specific focus is on press photography and how this has shaped how we view images and read the news.5

    4. hat did we learn from the pilots?
In this project we investigated which type of objects or collections are well suited for automatic image recognition, how image recognition can be deployed in the process of collection registration and publication, and how AI can answer identification questions from the public. We developed image recognition models for a variety of objects from the collections of Naturalis, Museon-Omniversum, Het Natuurhistorisch and a handful of other institutions. These models can be used to identify specific object types or species. The project provided a number of learned lessons for the museum sector about how to develop and deploy image recognition models. Important lessons concern the requirements for the images and associated data that are needed to train models, the amount of training data needed for different types of objects and how to best define classes in your model.

      Public interface and additional information
The public web interface launched in this project provides the user with the identifications generated by the different image recognition models and additional information about the species or object type (i.e. concise chunks of textual information, either with or without additional reference images). The additional information is both embedded in the interface itself as well as provided through links to existing additional online sources. With this information, users can verify the AI identifications with validated knowledge about the specific object type or species. The additional content was developed by Naturalis and project partners. Also, through collaboration with partners, we made good (re)use of content created within other ongoing projects. All content is sustainably managed in the information infrastructure of Naturalis and is suitable for reuse in other contexts.

Symposium for and with the Dutch heritage sector
We concluded the project with a symposium titled ‘Museum Collections & AI’ in Naturalis. During this symposium we shared the project results and lessons learned with colleagues from various museums, libraries and archives, with biodiversity researchers and with other people interested in the topic of AI. During this afternoon, the public web interface was launched: a website on which the developed recognition models can be used by both the public and heritage institutions. A number of other AI initiatives in the Dutch heritage sector were also discussed and presented during the symposium.

We are very grateful to NLBIF, the Mondriaan Fonds and Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds for their support. Thanks to their financial contribution, this project was able to come to fruition.

    6. This repository provides Python code that identifies plants, birds, and insects in photos.

This project was inspired by the amazing progress in identifying plants, animals and mushrooms in photos that has been made by iNaturalist in the past years. The iNaturalist team has trained machine learning models with their vast collection of photos and research-grade identifications. In 2019, iNaturalist released Seek by iNaturalist which identifies photos offline on the phone and identifies to a higher level than species when an identification to species cannot be made.

Google provides three models that have been trained with iNaturalist data - classification models for plants, birds, and insects. These Google models can be downloaded and used with Google's TensorFlow and TensorFlow Lite tools.

This code is based on the trained models that Google provides. It has been written to experiment with identification of species from photos and to give Seek's approach a try and compute probabilities across the taxonomic hierarchy.

This tool nature_id.py has been tested on Linux and Windows. It likely works on macOS as well.

I think I read an article about the identification of animals using satellite photos, but can find the link anymore.

    2. I stumbled upon this application identifying individual animals. You can upload a photo of the tail of a whale (humpback, I think) and it tells you which individual it is:

The BIOTOPIA Dawn Chorus event 2021: Birdsong in between science, art, music and technology. What can sound reveal about the precarious state of our ecosystems? How can we learn by listening to nature's songs? How are scientists and artists using art and new technologies to deepen our understanding of animal communication? This event was part of the BIOTOPIA series ESCAPING EXTINCTION, featuring musician and author David Rothenberg, artist Daisy Ginsberg and expert on animal sounds, artificial intelligence Dan Stowell, the leader of the Dawn Chorus Project Lisa Gill and BIOTOPIA founding director Michael John Gorman. In the end, there is an impromptu Dawn Chorus performance by David Rothenberg.

      Te gast:

Ze is al bijna tien jaar lang artistiek leider van het Russische kamermuziekfestival Winteravonden aan de Amstel in de Hermitage Amsterdam en geeft daarnaast leiding aan het Russisch Kamerkoor van Amsterdam;
    10. Ira Heuvelman-Dobrolyubov, geboren in Sint Petersburg en woont al vijftien jaar met haar Nederlandse man en inmiddels twee kinderen in Nederland. Ze is bestuurslid bij Free Russia NL, een grassroots community van Russisch-sprekende inwoners en burgers van Nederland, die protesten organiseert en humanitaire hulp biedt aan Oekraïne;
    11. Zelim Mesidov, geboren in Grozny, de hoofdstad van de Russische autonome deelrepubliek Tsjetsjenië. Hij vluchtte vanwege de oorlog daar rond zijn achttiende met zijn neef via Het Rode Kruis naar Nederland. Toen Poetin op 21 september 2022 de mobilisatie afkondigde moest hij zijn familiebezoek in Tsjetsjenië voortijdig afkappen;

      Gepresenteerd door: Coen Verbraak

To provide a global perspective, the landmark MIT study Limits to Growth demonstrated fifty years ago that continuous growth is not sustainable and will lead to a collapse of human society. This position received global attention again this summer when Gaya Herrington (director, Sustainability Services, KPMG) updated the study’s original research models using decades of observations and current data. Her work published in the Journal of Industrial Ecology in June 20211 demonstrates alarming support for the Limits to Growth original thesis on a global scale – that humanity cannot sustain unrestrained economic growth. What does this mean for the Midwest’s fastest growing region?

This program features conversations with Gaya Herrington, (director, advisory, Sustainability Services, KPMG US), Sandy Doyle-Ahern, (president, EMH&T), and Josh Knights, (director of partnerships, Sustainability Institute at The Ohio State University) on human society – local, regional, and global development, and the sustainable development strategies in practice designed to enhance well-being and steer us from danger

    18. Gaya Herrington and introduced himself. Taking her name for a riff on James Lovelock’s earth-as-an-organism Gaia hypothesis, he remarked: “Gaya – that’s not a name, it’s responsibility.”

Herrington, a Dutch sustainability researcher and adviser to the Club of Rome, a Swiss thinktank, has made headlines in recent days after she authored a report that appeared to show a controversial 1970s study predicting the collapse of civilization was – apparently – right on time.
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/jul/25/gaya-herrington-mit-study-the-limits-to-growth Research by Herrington, a rising star in efforts to place data analysis at the center of efforts to curb climate breakdown, affirmed the bleaker scenarios put forward in a landmark 1972 MIT study, The Limits to Growth, that presented various outcomes for what could happen when the growth of industrial civilization collided with finite resources.

Now, with the climate crisis increasing the frequency of extreme weather events, and many single events shown to have been made worse by global heating, the Club of Rome, publisher of original MIT paper, has returned to the study.

    https://www.nporadio1.nl/nieuws/binnenland/44502b99-67cd-4bf6-82a2-05bb8e85d2f1/de-wolf-in-nederland-angst-of-aanwinst
    Aangevallen

The AI community generously shares code, model architectures, and even models trained on large datasets. We are standing on the shoulders of giants, which is why the industry is adopting AI so widely.

When we start a computer vision project, we first find models that partially solve our problem.

Let’s say you want to build a security application that looks for humans in restricted areas. First, check if a publicly available pedestrian detection model works for you out of the box. If it does, you do not need to train a new model. If not, experimenting with publicly available models will give you an idea of which architecture to choose for finetuning or transfer learning.

Today, we will learn about free resources for computer vision, machine learning, and AI models.

  • TOP 10 PLATFORMS TO FIND COMPUTER VISION MODELS IN 2022

Computer vision is a fast-growing subfield of AI and deep learning. From cashierless stores in retail to crop detection in agriculture, there’s an increasing interest in CV applications. This has created a vibrant community that gladly shares architectures, codes, pre-trained models, and even tips for every stage of the development cycle.

Starting a CV project from scratch takes time. So, the usual process is, given a problem or a use case, you look for models that partially solve it. If one already exists, then training a new model is no longer necessary. Otherwise, you use the publicly available models to guide you through which architecture to choose as a base for fine-tuning or transfer learning.

New hardware: Previously we trained on three NVIDIA GP100 cards, this time we trained on a single NVIDIA RTX 8000. This is a newer, faster GPU with as much VRAM on a single GPU as 3 GP100s, and it supports mixed precision training.
New ML stack: Previously we trained using code written for Tensorflow 1 (TF1), this time we trained on code written for Tensorflow 2 (TF2). In addition to being newer, TF2 does a lot of things for us like automatically sizing and managing pre-processing queues to keep the GPUs fed, or orchestrating multi-GPU training and weight sharing. TF2 also supports mixed precision training.
New vision model: Previously we trained an Inception v3 model, this time we trained an Xception model. Xception shares a lot of design features with Inception, but it claims to be better suited to very large datasets like iNaturalist has been growing into. The downsides are that it requires more CPU power and takes up more memory.
New training code: Previously we trained our models using code that our collaborator Grant van Horn wrote as part of his PhD dissertation. This code was written for Python2 and a TF1 variant called tensorflow-slim, both of which have been end-of-lifed. This time we trained using a new codebase that we developed to take advantage of TF2 and Python 3.

  • his work is the first detailed and comprehensive overview of the distribution of the dragonflies and damselflies of Europe. It is an important milestone for professionals and amateurs alike. Covers the distribution and habitat selection of all 143 European species of dragonflies and damselflies. Gives a complete description of their global and European distribution, illustrated by over 200 distribution maps. Gives for each species information on taxonomy, range, population trends, flights season and habitat. Includes unique photos and flight season diagrams for virtually all European species. Contains extensive background information on taxonomy, conservation, and for each country an overview of the history of odonatological studies. The book is the result of a co-operation of over 50 European dragonfly experts who over the past decade compiled all records of dragonflies and damselflies, from the Azores to the Ural and from the North Cape to Lampedusa. These records were gathered by thousands of volunteers from across Europe. This endeavour was coordinated by Jean- Pierre Boudot (Société Française d’Odonatologie) and Vincent Kalkman (European Invertebrate Survey – Netherlands/Naturalis Biodiversity Centre).

    1. Skulls and bones

    https://netwerkdigitaalerfgoed.nl/nieuws/kun-je-met-beeldherkenning-de-collectieregistratie-versnellen-naturalis-onderzoekt-de-mogelijkheden/
