Scientists Track Endangered Sea Turtles In San Diego Bay.

Seminoff works at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center in La Jolla, and he has spent years tracking the sea turtles in the bay.

“There are a lot more dead turtles showing up in San Diego Bay than we’d like,” Seminoff said.

He finds that concerning.

Grab your earplugs. Invasive coqui frogs gain foothold in California.

Now the coqui has arrived in California. With few, and relatively small infestations, California should act immediately to eradicate this destructive invasive species. The coqui may look innocent, and even sound sweet to some, but its brief history in Hawaii tells a tragic story of how delayed action can have devastating consequences for biodiversity and human well-being.

Vista scientist helps unlock genome for threatened tortoise.

Plodding through the desert with a rounded shell and stumpy legs, a desert tortoise can live an estimated 50 to 80 years. It’s native to parts of California, Arizona , Nevada , Utah and Baja, Mexico, and specializes in digging long burrows where it spends most of its time.

The species has existed for 15 to 20 million years, according to the National Park Service. But loss of habitat and disease have wiped out parts of its population, and the desert tortoise is now listed as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act, and ranked as “vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Genetic analysis has become an increasingly important resource in scientists’ toolkit for studying and reversing that decline.

Rare blue-green bullfrog spotted in California.

American bullfrogs usually come in earthy shades of green and brown, so the sight of a bright turquoise frog sitting on the bank of California's Shasta Lake took wildlife biologist and photographer Jim Wiegand quite by surprise.
