Skinks: a snake-like lizard with smooth skin, small legs and a talent for disappearing.

These distinctive creatures are known as skinks, and the species most often found in the Tehachapi Mountains is the Western Red-tailed Skin (Plestiodon gilberti rubricaudatus).

La Jolla Girl Scout launches project to teach snake safety to hikers.

Far from a snake in the grass, on Sept. 1, Girl Scout Zena Traganza of La Jolla-based Troop 3171, submitted an environmental project for Gold Award consideration. The Gold Award is the highest achievement in Girl Scouting and recognizes those who complete projects that have sustainable impact in their communities and beyond.

Central Coast Salamander Highway Crossings Near Completion.

Construction is nearing completion on six undercrossings designed to allow tiger salamanders to safely travel between breeding ponds and upland habitat on opposite sides of a Santa Barbara County highway.

Invasion of the Giant Tadpoles: Wildlife Officials Say It’s No Joke.

Swimmers at Lake Anza in the Berkeley Hills found a slimy surprise this summer: huge tadpoles bigger than they’d ever seen there before.

They came in unnerving numbers — each five or six inches long. And they were rude.
